It was 140 years ago today that the second floor of the Burwell Building opened its doors for a formal dedication ceremony. The upstairs Opera House had just been completed, and the citizens of Gibson gathered to celebrate it. You can read more about the dedication ceremony at this link.
I thought it would be fitting to look back at the last 140 years of the Burwell Building and the events, people, and businesses that are important to its history. See the timeline below for a visual representation of these important people and dates.
There's so many more details that could be included in the above timeline, but I wanted to highlight the important ones. And, the story of the Burwell Building isn't over. The Gibson City Restoration Association is completing much needed restoration to the building. We will be completing masonry work and roof repairs this coming spring. We hope she will be around for another 140 years!
There is still time to donate to the 140 Men and Women Fundraising campaign. No donation is too small. Help us ensure that the Burwell Building gets the makeover that she needs. Click here to donate today: LINK
And if you haven't walked past the Burwell Building in downtown Gibson City, go take a stroll down memory lane. We have set up pictures of the Burwell Building through the years. And, we had cake last night at Mark's on First to celebrate Ole Lady Burwell turning the ripe old age of 140!! Cheers to another 140 years!!
